James Jean represents so much to the art world that its almost overwhelming to decide where to start. He is a legendary comic book artist, painter, illustrator, designer, printer, sculpture artist and really, a virtuoso of visual language. The Taiwan-born, NYC-trainted and now LA-based artist is an amalgamation of so much cultural and artistic history of the 21st century, and it feels almost like an oversight that he is now celebrating his first Canada solo show with Meadowlark at CICA Vancouver. The exhibition features a series of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and animation, narrating as so eloquently Jean can, a journey of "loss, recognition, and the redemptive power of cultural reclamation." James has been in the realm of installations for years, creating outstretched examinations of his storytelling and artistic vision. The 3x cover artist just seems to be a constant, a tour de force but with a subtle voice that deserves our attention. —Evan Pricco
