Baton Rouge Gallery – center for contemporary art (“BRG”) is proud to announce it is now accepting submissions for Surreal Salon 14, the juried exhibition that celebrates pop-surrealist/lowbrow art. Artists worldwide are invited to be a part of this special exhibition, works for which will be selected by Special Guest Juror Carrie Ann Baade. Artists selected for inclusion in the exhibition will be in the running for more than $2,000 in cash prizes as well as an online editorial feature with Juxtapoz

This exhibition will be held from January 4 – 27, 2022 at BRG (located inside the Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge Parish’s (“BREC”) historic City Park (1515 Dalrymple Dr.). During the show’s run, it will be open to the public, free of charge, during normal gallery hours (Tuesday-Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.).

Artists interested in being a part of this unique and exciting exhibition can find more information at http://www.batonrougegallery.org/surreal-salon/. Artists working in all media are encouraged to submit up to three (3) works for the juror’s consideration. The deadline for submissions is November 23, 2021.

Surreal Salon 14 is aimed at once again engaging audiences in an art experience like no other in the region by highlighting the growing popularity and exceptional quality of the pop-surrealist/lowbrow movement. Submissions will be reviewed via a blind jurying process that will ensure that works are selected based solely on their artistic merit (the juror will not see an artist’s name until after selections for the exhibition have been made).

The artist whose work is ultimately named “Best in Show” by the exhibition’s Special Guest Juror will be honored in an upcoming juxtapoz.com editorial focusing on the artist behind the work and the piece itself. This artist will also receive a $1,000 cash prize with a $600 prize going to Second Place and a $400 prize going to Third Place.

Baton Rouge Gallery would like to thank those sponsoring Surreal Salon 14: Lynne Pisto and John G. Turner & Jerry G. Fischer.

Over the years, Surreal Salon has enlisted well-known and well-respected jurors for Surreal Salon – including the co-founder of Juxtapoz Magazine, Greg Escalante, Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace, and internationally-renowned artists such as Ron English, Camille Rose Garcia, Josh “Shag” Agle, Elizabeth McGrath, Dan Quintana, Casey Weldon, and Greg “Craola” Simkins - to assist in making Surreal Salon as artistically engaging as possible. That tradition is once again renewed with artist Carrie Ann Baade filling this role (thanks in part to a partnership with the Louisiana State University School of Art). She will personally select each work to be included in the exhibition.

Surreal Salon 14 Special Guest Juror Carrie Ann Baade is an American painter. Her work quotes from, interacts with, and deeply relates to art history. Baade paints in dialogue with relevant masterpieces in order to reclaim them in a surreal narrative that is simultaneously biographical. Baade was raised on the front range in Colorado, received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, and received her MFA from the University of Delaware. She works in Tallahassee, where she is a full Professor of Painting and Drawing at Florida State University.

Since 2005, Baade has had more than 20 solo exhibitions at museums and other venues nationally and internationally. Her exhibits include: Mesa Contemporary Museum of Art (2018), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville (2012), the Delaware Contemporary (2007), La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles (2018), and the Ningbo Art Museum in China (2007). Her works have also been exhibited at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Harwood Museum in Taos, the Instituto de America de Santa Fe in Granada in Spain, and the Centrum Promocji Kultury Warszawa Praga Południe in Poland.

Over the past ten years, BRG has been proud to feature the work of hundreds of artists from more than 30 different states and more than a half dozen different nations as part of Surreal Salon. The gallery invites artists, regardless of media, to review the prospectus for Surreal Salon 14 and submit up to three works for the show’s juror to consider for inclusion.
