Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Back to School, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist duo Giorgiko. In Back to School, Giorgiko offers a series of eight new oil paintings that reflect on the childhood experience of school through a lens that is both nostalgic and perceptive. Drawing inspiration from their twin sons’ experiences entering school life, as well as their own memories growing up, the artists revisit everyday moments filled with innocence, awkwardness, longing, play, and quiet humor.
Students scramble in a game of dodgeball. A child patiently waits for a parent after school. Another gets dressed up in an itchy outfit chosen by their parents for picture day. These fleeting scenes tap into the universal experiences of childhood and the early struggles to find one’s place in the world. With a mix of playfulness and compassion, Giorgiko paints these familiar tensions with warmth and tenderness.
“We drew inspiration from our own children’s experiences and revisited personal memories to create these works," Giorgiko says. "We hope this show brings nostalgia and takes viewers ‘back to school’—reminding them of a time of smallness and innocence.”
